Born in Nancy, Simone Pheulpin grew up in the Vosges.\u00a0She revisits the landscapes of lakes and mountains of\u00a0this land of textiles between the folds of her works and\u00a0the thousands of pins that support them. Self-taught, the\u00a0artist has developed her own technique, which she has\u00a0been perfecting for nearly 50 years. With her original and\u00a0innovative practice, she supports and uses exclusively\u00a0cotton from one of the last Vosges manufacturers, but\u00a0also pins from the last French sewing pin factory.<\/p>\r\n
Simone Pheulpin\u2019s mastery of sculptural work allows her\u00a0to transform strips of raw cotton fabric into works that\u00a0are in turn coral, shell, moss, bark, fossilised stone, or\u00a0ivory, reflecting the materials, textures and patterns that\u00a0have inspired the artist. Mono-material, monochrome,\u00a0her work opens up an infinite number of possibilities of\u00a0shapes and volumes. This long and meticulous work\u00a0of stacking, winding, tightening is for her a meditative\u00a0process. Concealing the tangled pins that hold her\u00a0sculptures, the unbleached fabric leaves only an organic\u00a0trompe-l\u2019oeil to be seen.<\/p>\r\n
In 2017, Simone Pheulpin was recognised with the Grand Prix de la Cr\u00e9ation de la Ville de Paris. In 2018 she won the honorary prize of the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize. Her work has entered the public collections of several institutions: the Art Institute of Chicago in the United States (2018), the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (2018), the Mus\u00e9e des Arts D\u00e9coratifs (2019 then 2021) and, more recently, the CNAP collections (2024).<\/p>\r\n
In 2021, on the occasion of the artist\u2019s 80th birthday,\u00a0the MAD-Paris devoted to the artist a monographic\u00a0exhibition, bringing together around 50 pieces.
