With a degree in art history, Aude Franjou trained in tapestry at the Duperré school of applied arts. Since then, she has sought to reproduce the principles of plant construction through her material. Curves, roots, vines and corals are the bases of her inspiration. From tapestry, Aude Franjou has retained only the gesture. Little by little, the need to create in volume became essential.
It is a desire for repetition that has guided her work towards modular composition. A single point of departure, a single form that can be repeated ad infinitum, alive with the principles of replication and evolution. The choice of thread as a medium was a determining factor. Today, Aude Franjou has decided to use linen in her creations because of its many forms. The sculptures she creates are made by wrapping raw linen fibres in a thread made from the same fibres. The linen thread is wrapped around each piece of fibre hundreds of times. The tension provided by the thread holds the fibres together and creates a petrified material. Colour is the final touch. It arrives like a revelation of volume, like a signature.
The strength of Aude Franjou’s work lies in its embodiment of a living principle, a slow, silent but powerful and inevitable growth, the victory of living matter over inert matter. This is why she likes to exhibit her sculptures in both urban and natural environments.
